I decided to poke my head into the Obama Pastor thread, I knew what I'd find. On Monday, I was shown videos of both Wright & Hagee. For those who don't know, John Hagee is a televangelist who recently gave his support to John McCain (and McCain accepted). So while we bash on Wright for his anti-American sentiment, here's something for the McCain supporters:
As I noted in my Obama response, religion is often misused. Some people use it to inspire rage & motivate action. Others, like Hagee, use it for money. And religion is still very much a part of our American politics. It is said that you can judge how truly religious a preacher/minister/reverend is by the number of suits that they own. Hagee & Wright aren't very high on that scale.

McCain never attended Hagee's church, let alone for twenty years. Nor did he cite Hagee as a "sounding board," "mentor," or "spiritual guide." Nor did he write a book and title it after one of Hagee's sermons. Nor did he give $27,000 to his church. He simply saught an endorsement from a popular minister for political gain.

Yeah, it doesn't look great for McCain, but there's a really large difference between McCain and Obama here. Not that I agree with it, but I hope people don't portray McCain as a religious wacko just because of this (and the fact that the media would love to jump on a Republican for anything that would make a good headline).

My take on it is that Obama never talks about hating white people in his speeches, and if that changed after an election, we could just impeach him and get him out of office, so there is little risk of a ture racist getting into the presidency.

This doesn't make me believe that McCain is a religious fanatic or anything. it just makes me believe that he has extremely flawed judgement and doesn't know how to not offend people. Which is, for the president of the united states, a very big deal.

Not knowing how to not offend people is very different from choosing to not care about offending people. I'm not saying McCain is, mind you, but both are important to the office of the President.

Uh, yeah, I agree. What was your point? Either way McCain's doing something stupid.

Also my point: not caring if you offend people can be useful whenever you make a decision, because no matter what side of an issue you take, someone is going to be offended. The two points above, combined: McCain is a fool if he doesn't know to not offend people, but if he can make a decision without having his spiritual adviser making it for him, it's not so bad. Also also my point, but much more subtle: political correctness can blow me.
