Re: "Asian" vs. "Western" Parenting - An Essay
It's really not that long at all >.>
And there are ways to combine the two ideas, you know. I was raised with the "do whatever you want" attitude until I was in middle school. My mother let me find what it was that I enjoyed doing. And then, she pushed me. "The second and third hours are the hard ones." 3 hours was a short practice for me. She didn't let me get a job until college. It was music after school. Music in school. Music on the weekends. I did every band activity, class, and trip possible: all 3 levels of symphonic bands, jazz band, marching band, district and regional bands; I was playing in a band under my college's head professor of jazz my senior year of highschool. So yea, let the kid do whatever they want until they find something they really like. In fact, kinda make them dabble in everything, just to be damn sure they find it. Then, when they do, drill it into them. That's what happened to me, and I'm quite happy about how it worked out.

Re: "Asian" vs. "Western" Parenting - An Essay
Same with China there is so much pressure to succeed I had a buddy who's Mom worked in China so he spent his elementary years in China funniest thing ever white guy with a Asian accent. He said school was so much stricter over there, and pressure to do well on tests was huge.
I admit it was a good read, and it is funny when I was being raised my grandpa if I did something wrong or screwed around in school would give me a good crack. He always said the problem with kids these days is that they have no respect for there parents or teachers. I mean if you think about it it was only 70 years ago that teachers used to crack kids for doing something wrong, and it showed them respect. Western parents are to nice to there kids nowadays there is to much oh C+ what a great job try to improve, and the one thing I really disagree with is the every kid is special attitude. They shouldn't push that on kids cause the second they get into highschool, and someone makes fun of them they breakdown they don't know how to deal with it. We need to help kids get ready help to build there self esteem Chinese parents through telling there kids "Your fat lose weight" it help them be ready for highschool. It's funny I never read these things, but when I do I always get right into the subject

Re: "Asian" vs. "Western" Parenting - An Essay
I get the jokes all the time about my weight (or lack of it, actually) or how I hold my plate in a 'girly' way. I don't mind. They're only jokes.
I agree so much when it says that Western thought assumes children are fragile, while Asian thought assumes children have strength.

Re: "Asian" vs. "Western" Parenting - An Essay
I read that piece of crap a few days ago. The whole time I thought of my favorite 1984 quote:
You shall be empty, and we shall fill you with ourselves. You can beat people into doing things. It's not a good way to do it, but it can be done.
