Try a different font with a thicker presence. Instead of using the editing technique you have stick with a simple shadow effect (drop, possibly inner), then utilize the thin glow feature that's in the text to the left of hat we are editing.
I think of you do that you'll get a much clearer letter. ---------- Also, bevel can create the pop effect if you think that's what is desired
