The 51st State?
So Trump wants to "buy" Greenland. This is quite interesting, and its also rather alarming of his reaction when Denmark declined. I am glad Denmark did not even engage.
I also wonder is Trump actually afraid of a European superstate and Greenlands proximity to the US is an issue of it...maybe a side issue, but and issue all the same. If he is, why? The European - North American bond is unbreakable since WWII. Anywho what do you all this about the US trying to absorb Greenland?

Greenland will never be a US state. Even in the impossible event we acquired it, Greenland would remain a territory forever.
Denmark is part of NATO, right? Is Trump that concerned about our allies that he wants to realign the territorial map of the North Atlantic? I applaud our Danish allies for not putting up with this BS.

Even now, Canada is forced to make massive defence investments to keep the USA military out of its Arctic territorial waters. For some reason, the American government considers that the coastal waters off Canadian Arctic islands are international waters, and this isn't just Trump--it was just as bad with Obama. So, as a Canadian, the perspective of having yet another border with the USA to the North is frankly terrifying.

Since the coastal areas of Greenland are the only areas of relative value, it's kind of like trying to buy Libya, LoL. But seriously, the US does have some presence there, and the idea of buying was kicked around in the 1950's, I think. If the Trump admin. is smart, there are other places far more interesting, theoretically, to purchase: parts of British Columbia, for example, or maybe Sakhalin Island.

Seems US purchasing Greenland from Denmark is not a new idea. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propose...e_of_Greenland) the idea was discussed at top level in the US government in 1867, 1910, 1939, 1946, mid-1970s, and now in 2019, although the only formal offer was made in 1946.
US bought the Virgin Island from Denmark in 1916/1917 for USD 25M in gold: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...Virgin_Islands It may not be an absurd idea based on the history of this discussion in the US government, but I totally understand it seems absurd from the perspective of the people of Denmark and Greenland today. How would the US react to a proposal of a barter, receiving Greenland from Denmark in exchange for Florida? After all, US acquired Florida from Spain and Florida has been part of the US much shorter time than Greenland has been part of Denmark. US selling Florida seems like an absurd idea though.
