Cicero wanted the republic back, but maybe he would disagree seeing as he lived during the time of some very capable dictators. Though to what extent Rome ever was a true republic is debatable, more of an Oligarchy by today's standards.

Regardless of what Cicero thought, surely the common man during his time would have preferred a stable government as opposed to civil and successive wars which were liable to break out when an Emperor died.

The tax debate needs it's own post, I think.

But if it's going to go on here....whenever I see "taxation is theft", I am hearing in my head the "What have the Romans ever done for us?" scene from Life of Brian.

I don't have issues with taxes, in fact I would be fine with paying a little more if our money was going towards systems that helped working people and small business rather than megacorporations that happened to pay large bribes...I mean donations to PACs and money for endless war and spying on innocent US citizens.

Got mine filed and didn't owe money but barely. I'm getting a fat 24 bucks back from federal.

Almost had to pay on my rentals and business but tax deductions took care of that.

I sure did, she had the paperwork, I asked a clarifying question, her boyfriend and her froze, she confessed in a semi-hysterical fashion and mind you her boss (not titty boss) is LITERALLY 15 ft away.
