Deforestation is a sad and odd phenomenon and as I live in the US I can say it is a really weird thing in our history. But it is not without hope.
North of where I live in Florida there is a little town called Cedar Key. I don't think there are any cedars left in Cedar Key, not much anyway. Businesses cut them all down about 150 years ago to make No.2 pencils. Pencils. Now the area has kind of recovered with other species taking their place.
Something similar happened over time in Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio as the first American frontier expansion saw wholesale deforestation for lumber livestock and mining. There are very few places in that region that still have virgin forests, but with the decline of strip mining, and the realization that trees for lumber and paper are actually like any other cash crop, there are more trees in the US now than any other time since the early days. Weird, but we protect what makes us money.
I suspect the Brazilians are no different. But I hope the government there comes to its senses before it courts ecological disaster. Their forests are a lot more fragile than in other parts of the world.

The alternative Clinton is 71, Sanders is 77. IIRC the first 6 Presidents were in their 60s while in office during the late 1700's and early 1800's. It is debatable weather anyone alive today will actually see the result of our own actions outside of statistical extrapolation.
