Waiting times can be fairly long for non urgent surgeries. If you're hip replacement you may wait a little while, but if you've just had an enormous cardio infarction then you are going to get your stent put in very quickly.

You aren’t going to die waiting for life saving surgery in a public system, you only wait for non urgent appointments.
And what happens if all the hospital beds are full. I lived in Venezuela and we have universal healthcare. But right now the whole thing is a mess, too overpopulated, one bed has to be next to the other. A pearson might be getting surgery right next to another who might be having lunch. Hospitals have no space to take care of all those people.
