It's really not that long at all >.>
And there are ways to combine the two ideas, you know. I was raised with the "do whatever you want" attitude until I was in middle school. My mother let me find what it was that I enjoyed doing. And then, she pushed me. "The second and third hours are the hard ones." 3 hours was a short practice for me. She didn't let me get a job until college. It was music after school. Music in school. Music on the weekends. I did every band activity, class, and trip possible: all 3 levels of symphonic bands, jazz band, marching band, district and regional bands; I was playing in a band under my college's head professor of jazz my senior year of highschool.
So yea, let the kid do whatever they want until they find something they really like. In fact, kinda make them dabble in everything, just to be damn sure they find it. Then, when they do, drill it into them.
That's what happened to me, and I'm quite happy about how it worked out.
