what's the major diff? I don't know much about BSD Unix.
Also was thinking of getting a more advanced distro to play with any suggestions?

Suggestions? Yes.
http://www.virtualbox.org/ Download, install, then download a BSD install image, and install BSD. Linux and BSD aren't terribly different. They are similar creatures, with different philosophies. Linux is kinda laid back - you see the First Commandment of Linux all over the web. "Have fun!" BSD is more security oriented. You can mostly do the same things that you can do with Linux, but BSD tends to make you jump through more hoops to get there. You might think of BSD as a paranoid penguin.

BSD isnt really intended for personal use, more for servers and scientific stuff.
basically BSD is the direct code derivative from old unix where as Linux is an approximation for use by pc users.

BackTrack Linux. It has all the tools you could possibly need in the default installation.

but I could easily get a list of said tools and download them all into a BSD if it's better.. not hard.. I was thinking maybe gentoo or slackware.. I want to compile it all to my hardware so it's optimized and I know everything that is there
