I want to put useful info here about different issues so that others can perhaps learn and fix there problems.

Distro: BackTrack4 Final
Experience(years): 0.5
Issue Description: No sound what so ever in my OS.
Solution: Purged the alsa driver and reinstalled it.

Commands:

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa
sudo apt-get install alsa
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start

Distro: Ubuntu (bt4 is ubuntu base)
Experience(years): 0.5
Issue Description:Can't play mp3's
Solution: install extras, mp3 is a restricted format and can't be installed by default.

Commands:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
