I'm not certain it's for us to discuss, the issue seems to be going well using normal democratic methods, and the people that reside in the area don't agree 100% as well. Seems to be have support of about 50% of the pop which is quite a bit, but I'd wager the Spanish courts need more than a simple majority.

I think it is very hard because it is hard to say they are Catalan when Spain has controlled the area for so long.

Domination of a land means nothing. Its the sense of independence and patriotism of its people. My country was under the boot of the British for 800 years but we threw off the shackles eventually and are still more Irish than ever.

However the relationship of the Catalans and the "Spanish" is different as they are a respected equal in regards to rights and citizenship. The Spanish King, and the government of course do not want to lose a significant portion of their country no matter what. However its like the Scottish Independence question, it cannot be ignored and if Spain is truely a democracy where the people decide then in my opinion the people of Catalonia should be allowed to have a vote and let the result put the idea to bed, one way or another. Tbh.. this is probably whats going to end up happening, sooner or later.
