Do many Chinese people recognize that their government heavily censors the media to cover up dark spots in recent history? I remember reading somewhere that a shockingly small percentage of Chinese citizens under the age of 20 even know that something happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and wonder if that extends to atrocities committed during the Cultural Revolution and the eviction of the Nationalist Party in 1949, among others.

Everyone knows about the Tiananmen square thing even though the government censors it. However, most Chinese actually agree with the government. You must remember that the Chinese are a very conservative people. They believe that as long as the government is providing for the people and not messing too much with their personal lives, people should just stfu and live in peace. However, the Cultural Revolution is generally hated, but that does not lead the people to hate the current government, just Mao. The Chinese are a very tolerant people, even though they hate Mao for the Cultural revolution, they still recognize that he was a great man with a great character. Parents still use analogies of Mao's studiousness and revolutionary genius to educate their kids.

Hope that answers your question.

It does, thanks! Now, for a more light-hearted question: what do Chinese people think of "Chinese" dishes like chop-suey that originated in the U.S.?
