Re: Brexit
It was always going to be a clusterfuck. The brexiteers used the notion of British exceptionalism to convince the people they could somehow be better off without the EU. No surprise the EU is not going to give the UK any slack on the exit terms. Why should they?
The EU certainly has many structural issues but simply throwing in the towel without consideration of the extent of the consequences is really going to hurt the average citizen. Completely reckless and irresponsible politics by May, Boris etc. Nobody forced them to act upon the outcome of the nonbinding referendum, it was an incredibly shortsighted means of gaining a little political capital at the time. It'd be very interesting to see how opinion has shifted not just now but in another 6 months as the Brexit is about to be enacted.

Re: Brexit
While I hope that is true, I seriously worry which of the clowns will replace her.

Re: Brexit
It could even be labour, the restoration of power in the Stormont Assembly in NI has to come to a head at some stage, and they will pull conservative support at the drop of a hat if they dont get their way. Jeremy Corbyn for PM!

Re: Brexit
I am an American who occasionally delves studies foreign politics, and Brexit has been something I have paying close attention to. What is something that is always mentioned by many, is how it will difficult to enter the UK and visa versa after they're out. I am wondering why this will be difficult, even for a holiday, because when going abroad, it seems simple for me to go to the UK Border Control, and only being there for a brief time.

Re: Brexit
The UK never joined the Schengen Area, where internal border controls have been mostly abolished. I imagine that the UK's visa policy wrt the US is separate from the EU, so I wouldn't think it would be affected by Brexit.

Re: Brexit
I believe the only folks affected by this (the travel difficulty) will be European members of the EU, which to be fair international travel is a much bigger deal in Europe then the US due to nation size being comparable to our states. If you aren't a member of the EU I doubt you will notice any difficulties that didn't exist before.
British folks traveling through the EU will likely also be effected in a similar manner.

Re: Brexit
Thomond - A slight correction on something you said earlier in the thread.
Quote:
Although correct about NI and Scotland voting to remain (overall), still quite a sizeable amount of the population voted leave (44% NI and 33% Scotland). I don't think it's as binary as England voted leave - the rest voted remain. It is a complete shambles though and Cameron should never have called for a referendum.

Re: Brexit
I'm more impressed that by all the accounts I've read May is managing a Brexit that absolutely pisses everyone off, or at least attempting to. With just enough in to keep them beholden to EU regulations, while out enough to lose all influence on making those decisions.
Which really makes both Brexit and Remainers both thoroughly pissed off at the woman. It's really quite impressive.

Well to be fair Theresa May has the toughest job in the world at the moment. She was never going to make any side happy because she cant commit to one side without forcing an election or change in conservative leadership. She also has the evil DUP whispering in her ear.
