Check out me and stormkickers videos to see how we do it. I go straight down. he goes at an angle. A good way would be a 3x3 tunnel staight down too. Just find something you like.

alright i tried the angle thing and its not working out.. i mean its nice but it doesnt really cover a lot of ground you know? and, on top of that, it seems like an awful lot of work

Its all going to be a lot of work. Instead of mining down, how about you explore around you to find a natural cave system starting at the surface. No mining required. You only really need to mine a lot to reach the good stuff down at the bottom of the world.
