The Irish Abortion Question
Hey guys,
So in my country on the 25th of May of this year, the people of Ireland will go to the polls for a referendum on a very controversial issue. This is called the 8th Amendment to The Constitution. The 8th guarantees the rights of the unborn child inside the womb as equal to the mother carrying it. This makes ABortion highly illegal in my country. However that does not stop women every year making the short journey to Britain to have one there. There is an ultra liberal stance been taken by the government here, and a ultra-catholic stance been taken by those who disagree. The proposal is to allow abortion unrestricted up to 12. The Irish government will also have the right to make future amendments without a vote if this passes also. I would like to hear what others have to say about this issue and what its like in your country just to gauge the rest of the world on this. Currently I have the view that women should be allowed to choose what to do with their own bodies while equally agreeing that every unborn child has the right to life. I am still unsure what I would vote.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
I can think of another obsolete amendment that needs abolishing
But this is great progress for Ireland, first the gay marriage referendum and now this. I'm glad to see my old home taking such progressive strides.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
Mother should have the right to choose providing its not late term unless there are circumstances that would jeapordise the life of the mother or child in which case a later abortion should also be allowed.
The abortion in australia wiki page accuratley shows at the very beginning the breakdown for each australian state. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Australia

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
Abortion is legalized murder. But this is not God’s world and no one should be surprised when he comes back and executes justice.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
The Democratic Party here in the U.S. has a notion that abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare." I support that position. I also believe that a secular government has no legitimate role in pushing any religious agenda.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
I'm no expert, but you obviously wanna take the path with the woman having rights.
A woman may not be equal to a man but does it stop them from trying? And the kid, sure he/she doesn't know where they are or what's happening. But yes, they are still their own person. So in reality, it doesn't matter what you want because abortion is like killing someone, except it's more painless. Killing a person or getting an abortion is like depression. There is to escape from it, you will feel the guilt and then you'll wish you never did it in the first place.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
Given that 3,500 - 4,000 women are coming to the U.K. for abortions every year, the law isn’t stopping people from having them, just making them slightly more difficult.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
I'm anti abortion but because I'm a white cis gendered male I'm told I don't get to have an opinion on the subject by those in the opposition. *end sarcasm*
That said I hope that everyone living in Ireland goes out and votes, and truly educates themselves on the issue and thinks very deeply on where they stand on the issue personally. As I'm unsure how often constitutional amendments happen in Ireland but if its anything like it is in the US, it is something that has been done very very rarely. In fact I'm pretty sure Prohibition was the only amendment to the Constitution to ever be removed. As I hate folks from other countries telling the US how to live our lives, and how we should adopt their laws, I will merely state my stance and that they should vote only after a great deal of thought and self reflection. If you come to the opposite conclusion then me that is your right as a human being, your right to vote to determine your own country's outcome is yours as well.

Re: The Irish Abortion Question
I also understand that the only circumstance where abortion is legal in Ireland at present is when the mother’s life is at risk.
If that is the case how the hell does this happen? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20321741
