I did a full forum searching for this and I am appalled that with a forum community this big, Dungeons and Dragons wasn't given its fullest respects. I bet you there are at least five other people here who play it recreationally (or religiously :P ).
I used to play this all the time but my usual group has gotten very busy lately and we are picking it up again during the summer.
So, what is your favorite edition to play? What is your favorite class/variant?
I usually play 3.5 but I have been trying to find an excuse to play 4e. However, my group is very hesitant to switching over because of how much money we have invested in 3.5.
In 3.5, my favorite class to play is the Paladin (Paladin of Tyranny variant especially).

Hi, i am about to start running a campaign my brother Dave started, before i decided to run it i was a Elven Paladin, only did a few fights so dont really know allot about it
we are in another campaign which is really just a step-in for their star wars campaign (pretty much just like D&D but futuristic) and on there i am a Half-Orc Fighter (i killed the weapons shop-keeper and we stole all of the weapons after convincing the guard who heard the commotion that the shop-keeper was the culprit =D)
and as soon as my brother Daniels friend gets back from Cali. we are starting yet another campaign (the one before didnt have all of us involved but a few outsiders) which has been in the planning for the past half of a year =)
So i play as much as i can to further my playing&DMing knowledge and capabilities

Future campaigns with D&D roots are always fun. I played in a campaign that was based off of the Fallout world. He was an Orc barbarian named Forest Gruumsh who got involved in mafia dealings and underground boxing contests. He also invested heavily in plastic explosives and placed them in the trunks of cars while throwing them at military bases.
In that very same campaign, I played a human ranger named "The Strongest Boris, the Angry Russian" who also murdered a shopkeeper except he did so to make a point. That shop keeper hated outsiders with a passion and so he did indentured servitude tasks so he could get close enough to use the man's restroom. At that point, he rigged up enough dynamite to blow the store to hell. Both fortunately and unfortunately, men in powered armor raided the city which made it so The Strongest Boris wasn't able to take credit for the act of terrorism.
It is amazing that D&D can spark the best of our imaginations.

which reminds me of what i wanted to do for a shopkeeper in the campaign that i will be running, i dreamed that i was a player and i was a outsider of this little town and quite a few people were staring holes into me and i went to the item shop off to the right of the town square and just wanted some potions so i could heal up easily instead of dieing, and the shop-keep for some reason hated my guts and charged 3x the normal rate and i couldent buy anything so i had to leave and rest outside of the town, and out there someone spotted me and ran into town alerted the guards that someone tried to assault her and several guards and their beasts came and killed me =(
so im thinking maybe use somewhat the same for a shop-keep but more negotiable, oh also i use 3.5e also someone who invested a lot into 3.5 and didnt want to spend even more on something i might not have liked (although outside sources tell me that DMing in 4e is a lot easier because of spell descriptions and such being more available and having more information on how much you can use it and such, so if you decide to check it out let me know)

I hate when shopkeepers just randomly hate you. But that is why my parties always have such diversity. That way, the shopkeepers have at least one person they always like. When dealing with shopkeepers, we also have every racial language learned so that they may feel like we care more when we speak their racial tongue.
I have taken a look at 4e and it seems like a lot of fun. I just don't want to DM a 4e campaign because I am not familiar with the rules. Maybe I will play online first.

From what I've heard, 4e is the WoW of roleplaying games. Very strictly defined class roles, and not much room for variation. I'll stick to 3.5, thanks. :D
My friend has been running a campaign for a while, and like Badbrownies, we've had to stop due to various things using our time, and will probably pick it back up during the summer. It's fun.

Our group is very bad at meeting, we play 3.0 I developed a dice fetish it seems and even though I dont play it religiously (no more than 30 sessions over 3 years) I have 7 die sets plus other dice. I play Half Orc Barb and thanks to our DM I have like 5x the hit points of the weakest player and have more than double the lowest AC of the player with the least. Combine that with the fact our DM cant roll very well, my character is basically untouchable since he cant make the encounters too hard.

I haven't played since 2.0. I'd like to. If anyone wants to set up a D & D thread?

3.5, though I haven't played in so long because my group has scheduling issues. Personally, I've always liked the Psionic classes (the Psion especially), and I'm good at playing them. Too good, in a few campaigns I was banned from using them. When I can't, sorcerer or other backline blaster. Or anything rouge-ish.

how about we request a D&D section so we can do a temp campaign? if anyone is up to it i can DM or someone else can (if they wish) im sure i can pump out something nice and juicy for it

Ever since I moved to Israel, I've had problems finding people and even harder to set up a group when we're all busy with the army...maybe we can do one over the computer? :D

That would be interesting, I'd be up to it Vanik. :lurk: However, seeing as I don't know you in RL, I'd like to know who's DM skills are better, Badbrownies or yours because I'd like to know who would be a better DM at that in these forums.
Anyways Badbrownies, I'd thought I'd answer your question even if I am an ex-D&D player, which was why I felt I wasn't qualified to start a D&D thread in the past. (for now anyways) As you may or may not already know, I actually used to play D&D with Badbrownies and his D&D group until my parents deemed it "evil" (coughbullsh*tcough) and forced me to stop. :( I've always loved playing as either an elf (to Badbrownies greatest objections so much that he even resurrected me as an Orc in one of the last campaigns I played in) which meant I usually played as a magical character. I also liked playing as any warrior class that used brute strength or was a fighter so I also liked playing as a barbarian as well. I am really only familiar with version 3.5 but I have skimmed through the 4.0 versions.
It is amazing that D&D can spark the best of our imaginations.
I second that. If and when I am able to officially play D&D again, I've always wanted to DM a drow campaign. They act alot like the Terran Empire from star trek where they backstab each other to advance in society and I have a obsession with elves/drow that BB often makes fun of me for it and says that Orcs are better.

If you want to set up a campaign, I would love to play it. From the looks of it, we are mostly familiar with the 3.X rules so it would most likely be one of those campaigns. Maybe what can be done is play over Windows Live or some similar messaging service and have a thread set up for updates as to what happens for those who may want to join.
I would like to DM, but right now, I am a little too busy to plan something :( So, it would be best if someone else did it.

You dived between his legs and jumped up to your feet before he even realized you had moved, you take hold of your long sword firmly and thrust it into his back several times (roll 1d10 (it = 8 x2 (was a critical))) and he drops dead.
In that little thing i did there, you are a dwarven fighter, and he is a half-orc barbarian =)
obviously that just popped into my head, but when i plan things like that out it is a lot cooler =D

Well, if we have to use your website, you will need to send me the URL. I haven't had the pleasure of being introduced to it yet.

I bought the books to 3rd edition and just could not get into it. I really loved 2nd edition because it let more of your imagination determine things as opposed to dice rolls. 3rd edition just seemed way too complicated to me. It was far easier for a noob D&D player to pick up 2nd edition as opposed to 3rd. perhaps I am old school and I love the class defined roles with a little bit of variety.
I sure do miss playing, I rarely played I was the DM pretty much my whole D&D career. I have tons of notebooks and notes on my own world. I could actually probably just put together a series of books if I could find the time and energy to do it. Once I got out of college and got a real job I have been too mentally exhausted to really get back into it. I sure wish I could find that passion again for it.

I know exactly what that is like. Moving on in life can take away the passion for the game. But, all one needs is to find a group of like minded individuals to bring it back.

my website for all you non-knowers - http://vbspot.net
VBSpot translates into Vaniks Book Spot, I go out and find books that has been came from real books and has been put onto the internet and horde them all into my website and let people read them. If I could find any/all of the Dungeons & Dragons books online I would TOTALLY put them on my website.
Currently I am doing a LOT of research for my current campaign and have little time to really work on this one, maybe someone else can? I can set up a forum somewhere so we can do it but I doubt anything would happen anytime soon, but a forum would really be good for D&D since you can send pm's relating to what is happening (like if a character is off on his/her own) so let me know.

hmm.. I've been kinda avoiding this thread to keep from admitting to myself that I haven't had the passion to play D&D/AD&D in many ages now.
I sarted playing when I was 12, and finally stopped playing regularly when I was about 30. A couple of short adventures here n there over the years since. Most of my experience has been with 1e and 2e. I've acquired some *coughcoughmanycoughcough* pdf's of 3e and 3.5e and read the main books pretty well.
When I was active in it (lived and breathed it) I ran a campaign loosely based off of Camelot. Another campaign that a friend ran was far future after a global nuclear war, which was a fun twist on things. Damned funny trying to figure out what the hell a cassette tape recorder was for. ;)

lol what is so funny is that D&D CAN be played in a futuristic world, since they have plasma riffles in the 3.5e book (somewhere tucked off to the back of the book)
right now I am writing some stuff for my campaign (that is pretty much not going anywhere because of needing one last session for my bro until it is my turn) and that is going pretty good, unlike my brother I am open minded and understand that un-thought of things happen (such as me and a few friends killing the weapons shop guy and fooling the guards and stealing all of the weapons) and am trying to think of ALL of the things they might do, such as adding another two guys in the back of the weapons shop to help the guy in the front if something goes down :P
and I am in this 5-person Star Wars D&D campaign and it is going really great right now, me and this guy Garth just broke up this 6 man riot in the clothing store by ourselves and sat the two survivors facing each other like uber close and used 'old' interrogation methods.
he started by asking the one (that was facing him) questions and when he didnt answer, Garth lifted his gun and put it to the back of the (second) guys head and blew his brains out all over the (first) guy who then started talking =D

Okay. . .enter the high lord. I'm not "Lord Necronomis" for nothing. I've been playing since I was about 5. IW, I think you and I are the only ones that even know what a first edition set looks like. >.>
And there is another game by TSR, called Alternity. It uses the 2nd edition rules and is a more realistic setting, ie, health stays the same no matter your level, only skills increase. Alternity can be played in any PL from 0 (nigh-prehistoric) to 8 (post apocalyptic with super high tech and aliens and all that). I've played on all the DnD settings (except for 4, because I read the PHB and about vomitted. . .no ECL? Fighter has magic? Half-dragons as a player race?) and of them all, 3rd is the most balanced and open-ended. 3.5 isn't too far off, and I allow those books in my campaigns so long as alterations are made when conflicts arise between them and the 3E rule set. I also made a StarWars rule set that uses the DnD 3E engine, because I've read the "legit" StarWars RPG books, and didn't like em. So I have stats for jedi/races/monster/items/starships/droids that are made within the 3rd edition book stuff.
Like Iron Wolf, I also have acquired "some" pdfs. . .somewhere in the 120 range of DnD 3rd and 3.5 books, as well as the necessary Alternity books.
Aaaaand, finally, the big score. RolePlay. I run a RP site, free-form in our own universe. The whole point of that site is gaming and RP, so we could easily do the DnD there, and if anyone is interested, join our free-form RPs. That would also mean my DnD buddies could join us, because most of them are on Nexus.

interesting, in my campaigns I would NEVER allow anyone to be any race/class that would make them too strong (off-balancing the game) such as the Half-Dragon
when my dad was still DMing he had a enemy that was like the second strongest in our campaign which was a Half-Dragon and we could never get past it, and he liked re-using it in campaigns >__<

I started on The Players handbook and Unearth Arcana and I dabbled in Basic a bit too. The cavalier and Barbarian were such a cool class. I sure miss those simple days. Wilderness survival guide was so cool because it introduced non weapon proficiencies.
