Today there was a great game played in my History 12 class called Diplomacy.
We were to roleplay nations in groups of 3, taking place in 1930's Europe.
The idea is, we have to talk with other nations and reach agreements, hoping to reach the requirements of each action, in order to get a point.

For example, if Britain were to oppose the occupation of Sudetenland, this action could only be played if France and the Soviet Union also oppose it. With their support, 1 point is awarded to all teams. However, if Germany did not demand for Sudetenland during the use of that action, the opposing teams gain no points.

So in the end, whoever has the most points win. Also, you get bonus points for certain things. If team Germany starts World War II before round 10, that team gets 3 points. If Britain and France stop Germany's invasion of Poland, both treams get 2 points.

The following teams are Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union.

Unfortunately, I was picked at random to join the Team France!
By the end of the day though (round 3), good progress was made.
Britain, France, Italy, and the Soviet Union are currently in an alliance to oppose aggression in Europe! We even made full support for Austria's independence! Unfortunately, we weren't able to stop Italy's invasion of Ethiopia.

So yeah, quite a fun game. It's gonna continue tomorrow, wish me luck!

Have you played the actual game Diplomacy? It's the best boardgame out there. Check it out.

Actually, I've been thinking of starting a Legion Diplomacy league. Needs 7 people. Anyone interested?

I'd be interested, as long as experience is not required.

Game has ended!
And to everyone's astonishment, including me, France won!

Here were the scores:
Britain: 7
France: 8
Germany: 7
Italy: 7
Soviet Union: 6

It was amazing. At first, all were working together to stop Germany. But then everyone turned on Italy! This was because Italy kept getting free points by invading Ethiopia over and over again. Britain and France stuck together through it all! Not once backstabbing each other. Also, War was prevented before the game ended! So everyone except Germany and Italy got 2 bonus points! This is how France won because we were one point ahead of Britain.

It was such a close game. By round 10, Britain and France finally sanctioned Italy for invading Ethiopia for a 4th time. This gave us both 1 point each, while at the same time, preventing Italy from reaching 8 points.

Soviet Union was in trouble because they only had two moves left by round 6. They could either oppose the invasion of Poland, but only if Germany actually invades. Or, they could sign a Non-Aggression pact with them. With such limited actions available, they did nothing for 3 rounds (which explains why they're in last place) because Britain and France pleaded that they don't sign the pact. By round 10, they eventually signed the pact with Germany, bringing both up by 1 point. It didn't matter, because War was prevented!

It came at such a shock that France won. My teacher and I celebrated by humming the French national anthem! It was such a great game. So intense!

That sounds downright awesome. We did something somewhat similar in an American history class in high school. The class split up into three groups that represented the three general regions of the Antebellum-era U.S. (the North, the South, and the West, starting in 1820 going through 1860). By voting on different pre-selected issues, based on a list of goals for each region, we each got various numbers of points, which showed how the 40 years leading up to the Civil War actually benefitted the West more than the North (and obviously the South) due to their more moderate position on some issues. It was a lot of fun.

A Diplomacy league also sounds fun. What kind of time commitment are we looking at?

I'd be up for Diplomacy! Dang, haven't played that game in about 15 or so years.

History Games I've played in the last fiveish years:

World History 7: We played a Risk-like game based on the Warring States period in feudal Japan. I was Osaka and had crappy teammates (rice, the currency was awarded on doing related homework, and quiz scores determined armies). We never had any moves, and got conquered by Shikoku. The last day was epic though, as Edo finally moved out and captured the northern state above it, which also got them Hokkaido as a vassal. Thus Kyushu, a vassal of Shikoku, came up half of Japan with six armies on the last move of the game to defeat Edo and win the game.

European History 10: We did what you did, except it was pre-WW1 and we had to form verbal agreements to avoid war. Usually we ganged up on France, because Britain had a lot to gain and Russia had a lot to (thanks to a Balkans compromise in exchange for not intervening in the war with France).

Overall, the vast majority of the commitment is simply talking with the other players to make/break alliances, pacts, deals, etc. The only time requirement is PMing your moves to the game master every day or so. (I'd be GM, prolly).

I would suggest AGEOD's American Civil War, Europa Universalis 2 and 3, Hearts of Iron 2 as well as Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun. But they're all pretty hardcore.
