And I was wondering, what sort of random software I should start downloading to make it super shmexy?

So far:

Microsoft Office
Utorrent
Adobe Reader
Daemon Tools
Veoh TV
Quicktime Player
WinRAR
Firefox

Anyone got ideas?

OpenOffice isnt compatible with Word. And being a student, thats a very big problem. Plus, if he already has MS Office then awesome, if not he can just download it...

I'm a student, I've always used OpenOffice and never had problems with any compatibility. In fact, OpenOffice was recommended for coding macros.

Phooey on you. I still get some of my music through LimeWire, though the ratio of purchased music to stolen music will go back down once the fall semester starts. ;)

I only use OpenOffice.org on my laptop, and the only problem I occasionally have with .doc is sometimes the document will have weird artifacts that look like letters which work with the text, but aren't. Hard to explain if you haven't seen it, but it's very minor and I rarely have any trouble with it.

Yeah, over the last year and a half it's been getting exponentially more difficult to find stuff that is actually what it claims to be...

^ This.

Frostwire is so much better it isn't funny.

So far....not a huge difference. I was expecting the not-that-rare episodes of Star Trek to be coming in a lot faster. I suppose I'll have to give it more than 20 minutes to find out how much better it is.

Frostwire, huh? I'll be giving it a test-run tonight then. I've gotten REALLY tired of dealing with Limewire's junk files.

Windows XP Professional SP2

I know jack shit about computers, but it's a custom build that was the best of the best of the best four and a half years ago.

EDIT: Oh, and it's got like 2 gig of ram, so I'm not worried about that... although the massive amount of crap was the reason I had to reformat in the first place

Is frostwire just like limwire?

Is frostwire just like limewire?

Yes. But its completely free and doesn't have to be upgraded to get the speed.

Ok, so there's some dissention about Frostwire. Btw Woody, thanks for calling my attention to it. It does perform better than Limewire. To hijack the tread some... what's some of the better P2P software, either purchased or freebie doesn't matter to me.

The Corporal

I've heard good things about Ares, but I do believe it's Wyndoze only (if it didn't get taken down in the last round of RIAA b.s.). I don't know of any other decent ones either, I guess.

What?

Iron Wolf, KCeasy is good for P2P, basically it includes all the popular P2P protocols in one handy application.

To hijack this further, I need a way to unprotect iTunes files. I'm using a SYNC instead of just an Mp3 player. Any ideas?

Also, google earth is really cool.

How bout, don't use ITunes for music. I only use it for TV shows, Podcasts, and the occasional video I cant find elsewhere.

Quite simply there are many better ways to get music without restrictions than ITunes.

If you're still looking for good software, AVG has a good antivirus program, with a free version available.
For instant messaging, I use Pidgin (formerly gaim) which is a lightweight program which you can choose to enhance via plugins if desired. It handles all the major IM services, as well as some lesser known ones, and IRC, too.

For media, I use the incredibly lightweight Media Player Classic. Easy to use, clean interface, and it plays damn near everything. Everything it doesn't can be fixed by downloading codecs.

Speaking of Codecs, I only use Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative for those respective media formats. I got so tired of Quicktime and iTunes always bugging me to upgrade, and Real player just plain stinks.

Everest, by Lavalys, is a great PC component monitor. It lets you view info on all the parts hooked up to your computer, which can be very useful when diagnosing problems or identifying parts.

Foxit Reader is a much more lightweight PDF viewer than Adobe Reader, and doesn't constantly harrass you to update. The only downside is there's no browser plugin to view PDFs in a window, but that's only a minor setback. I just download PDFs and view them anyway.

7zip is great for file/folder compression, like zip and rar files, but is compatible with a wide variety of those formats.

Most of this stuff is open-source, too, so you can find a lot of them for multiple platforms.

Enjoy!

If you had a Mac ( :) ), you would be using the following instead of the programs you listed:
Colloquy - makes IRC look sexy. I don't IM very much, but just don't use AIM - they haven't updated the Mac version past 4.7 and it probably would suck anyways if they did.

VLC - plays anything. Corrupted files? Yep. Codecs? Not necessary. Full of porn viruses? Where are you downloading these videos from? :P

System Profiler - comes with the computer. Does everything Everest does. Also allows you to look at network hardware, applications, and fonts installed on your computer.

Preview - comes with the computer. Opens PDFs and common picture formats. Easy to use, when you don't make use of the PDF Download FF plugin to view them in the browser.

Stuffit - when you're not using Mac OS X's built-in zip creation/expansion capability, Stuffit will open just about everything - .tar, .gz, .rar, .hex, .bin, .sea, .zip, and anything else if I forgot one. If you get the deluxe version you can create archives in all of those formats (I think, I don't have the deluxe version).

Hey Woody, did I forget anything?
