View Full Version : Favre...Everyone's Favorite QB

A bit different from presidential candidate topics, this is for a change in pace (yes...the American kind of football :p)
Ok, with the wonderful drama around potentially one of the best QB's of all time or at least one of the most favorite QB's fan wise of all times, what do you guys think about the situation? It seems that the media keeps getting pieces of the situation and picking them apart. Hopefully it will be resolved soon, but what would be best for Favre, the Packers, and the league at this point?
Basics of the scenario if people haven't been following:
After deciding after the last season to retire, Favre has decided to come out of retirement. He seemed indecisive if this was what he really wanted until Tuesday when he sent in his letter requesting reinstatement to the league. The Packers are openly unwelcome to Favre returning to the Packers as they have "moved on" with unproven Aaron Rodgers and it seems to the NFL in general even offering to essentially buy off Favre to stay retired ($25 million in a marketing and licensing deal). Things are getting even more interesting as the commissioner has said:
“I think we have to force it,” Goodell said. “I think it’s come to the point where there need to be some decisions made on behalf of the Packers, on behalf of Brett, on behalf of all the fans.”

Seems like the issue will be solved one way or another Monday. Seriously though, is this the way that the Packers should be treating a legendary QB? Its making them look like the idiots, not Favre and having the commissioner involved when if it was almost any other player, he would not be, does not look well for the Packers.
Thoughts, comments...I needed a change to something sports related ;)

I think Favre should have stayed retired. Don't get me wrong, I love watching him play and would have liked to see that for another year, but that conference in March gave me closure. As a Packer fan, as a Favre fan I moved on. It sounded like Brett was ready to sleep in until noon, wear a bathrobe and boxers all day, drink beer, and play golf. And after five offseasons of "will he retire? who knows? Brett sure as hell doesn't, until May at least" him coming out early on and stating for everyone that he was done was something the fans and the organization needed. But now that he's back....I understand that he still has the competitive spirit and wants one more chance at the big show, but he should have been a little more careful about telling the world he didn't think he had anything left to give to the game.
As things stand right now, there is still a chance that he could stay retired (and pocket $25 million in "marketing and licensing fees" or whatever Ted Thompson called it). Goodell hasn't signed the reinstatement letter and has intentionally put it off until Monday so that everyone has one last chance to think about things. If he does process the reinstatement, Favre has only two real options - sit on the bench until the end of the season (or until Rodgers gets hurt) or get traded to a team he doesn't really want to be traded to. I doubt Thompson will be dumb enough to send him to a division rival knowing what he can still do on the field, not to mention the betrayal many Packer fans (myself included) will feel if one more player goes to the Vikings.

Here's my belief. The average football player could play to a maximum age of 45 (give or take a few years). You only get one chance to play football and its not like Favre is the only player ever to change his mind. Now, I think that based on the fact and belief that you only get one chance to live your life's dream, Favre should be allowed to come back. People make mistakes and he already said that he's physically able to play. He's 38 if I'm not mistaken.
The only thing Favre has done that I don't like, is that petty public crap like phone calls, texts and press statements. I don't think that's fair. I think he shouldn't say anymore until he has made a final decision.
Finally, I think that if the Packers will not let Favre come back (let's face it, its a Catch 22 because you can't be unfair to Rodgers who has been waiting to play forever), then you need to respect his wishes by trading or releasing him. He still technically...scratch that, he still is a Packer. And I'm sick of Packer friends getting pissy when Favre talks about playing for another team. Be pissed at the Packers franchise not the beloved Favre. Sure, there's team loyalty principles to a point. But if Favre wants to play the game of football, it should not matter who he plays for. There are teams that would gladly welcome him and I think that he should go to wherever they will let him play.

Really, for him to come back isn't really in the Packers best interestes. Yes, he was good, but if the team has moved on, they need to build up around the new guy. Also, it would be stupid for Farve to go to another team just to get one or two more seasons with people he doen't know and it would sort of ruin his image as THE Packer QB.
But to get rid of him the Packers would have to trade him, which I bet they don't want to do because of the percident it would send. If someone didn't like their team, they could "retire" and then come back and join the team they want.

I am a huge packers fan and I live in NY. Me and my friends who is a giants fan got tix to the playoff game at GB last year and we hitch hiked all the way from nyc to gb. I am a die hard GB fan and Favre is my fav player of all time. He is being a reall asshole at the moment. he should stay retired and give arron rodgers a chance, the Pack have moved on and Rodgers has been waiting patiently for 3 years and this is ridiculous!

The average NFL player only gets to play 4 years (Maybe 3). The NFL is totally different from any other sport. Sure big stars play a few more years but the average is much lower than those guys.

Farve got traded to the jets! So that one guy from NY (I don't feel like scrolling up at the moment) would still be happy. =p

Fuck Favre. Sweet Jesus it's already pathetic that they put him on the cover of the new Madden in a fucking Packers jersey. I wonder how many cheeseheads are going to be crying over that.

They did that months ago, by the way. It was intended to be one last honor as he gracefully retired (not to mention he had a great season, definitely Madden cover-worthy). Of course, that all went out the window when he came back and was promptly traded. Some Packer fans are sad that he's playing for another team (seeing his Jets jersey is still a mindfuck for me) but many of us, myself included, have moved on. One fan who was interviewed at the game on Monday said that no matter what, Favre will always be a Packer and that we'll support Rodgers because he is the quarterback. No man, even Brett Favre, is bigger than the team.

Some Packer fans? The whole fucking state of Wisconsin is in mourning.

All the Packer fans I've talked to have moved on, to some degree. The rest of my home state will come around, unless Rodgers suffers from an epic fail during the season.

That's almost shocking. Most of the Packer fans I've talked to when I went with my cousin to go pick up Madden were all crying over Favre and they were going to put the box up on display....... fuck, why couldn't they just put him in a god damn Jets jersey.

We are totally flying our Packers flags at half staff right now.
Also I couldn't find an eye rolling smiley =[

EA did have a Jets-themed version of the cover available for download from their website. They could have made the change on all the copies if the trade had gone through maybe a month or two earlier than it did, but with a week to go the covers are printed and games are probably being shipped to retailers.
