This is a little short story/poem that I wrote a little while back about the earthquake in Haiti. Our teacher found some images online, and we used them to write a creative writing piece. I'm not super great at writing, just looking for some feedback. Well enough of my talking, here comes the writing:

“I walk alone.”

Only just yesterday, these streets were vibrant and full of life. Now, they are deserted, abandoned. It is a ghost town. There is no one left, and yet I hear their voices, caught in the still air. The rubble covers the streets and makes walking difficult, but it doesn’t matter to me. I have only one goal here. I came to find one thing, and I will search, alone, until I find it.

They say I’m crazy. They say there is no hope here. But I know that the one thing that matters the most to me lies somewhere in the ruins of this town. They try to keep me from coming. They tell me it is too dangerous out here. But I will not listen. They do not understand. They cannot imagine what I feel. He who has no hope is lost forever. What I have here is worth more than life itself. I am willing to risk everything, if only to find one thing.

Some came back to loot. Some came back to find old belongings or family heirlooms. What they look for, what they want, are things that are worthless compared to the reason why I came here. Nothing I had has ever been worth more, and nothing will ever be. I know this as a fact.

There is but one reason why I’m here.

There is but one reason why I walk alone.
