I'm surprised there isn't a topic on this already, so I'm starting one.
If any of you have seen Bungie's website, they've put up a whole lot of new stuff recently, including a pretty nice game play video.
(look here): http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=24791
So what do you guys think of all this? They're changing a lot of things for sure, like adding sprint, replacing the BR, changing the shotgun, and adding a needle rifle and grenade launcher. Do you guys like these changes? Or do you think it's too much? I personally like most of them, the new AR looks really cool and BR replacement seems pretty interesting. I'm not sure about the grenade launcher though, which has spawned multiple topics on Bungie along the lines of "can i haz n00b tube pl0x?" I just think it's pretty unnecessary when there's already a rocket and a Brute shot. Great news though, the Elites are back!

Friends & I have been pretty regular Halo 3 players but as time has gone on, I've really come to realize how poorly balanced and how purely silly the matchmaking system has become.
I really expect Bungie to follow Infinity Ward's model and allow customizable weapons, armors (which we saw w/ sprint), perks (murder mode maybe?), etc. So far, I'm not really impressed. Game looks like Halo 3 & 1/2 so I'm interested in the beta if only to test drive all the changes Bungie seems so proud of.

Yeah, they at least need to fix the matchmaking system, plus rank in halo is just annoying.

imho Mass Effect has sort of become the new Halo, with regards to eagerness of anticipation of new releases in the trilogy, polished gameplay, beautiful environments, etc. It's not an FPS, but there it is.
Halo 3 was great and all, but it's over 2 years old. ODST was also pretty great, but the basic mechanics of the series are about 10 years old with little change.
Also, Reach/ODST happened before Halo: Combat Evolved, but they keep going back and doing revisionist history and bringing in all these neat weapons that inexplicably never appear in the older (made)/later (chronological story) games, which creates a kind of disonance (sp?)
Still, when Reach comes out, I'll undoubtedly buy it and love it. I'd like to see some more Single Player scenarios and dynamics come from the Halo universe, not just endless new multiplayer options.

Yeah, the hype for Halo 3 was pretty crazy, and after a few years looking back I realize that it didn't live up to the epic, final battle-for-the-galaxy it was supposed to be. They need to go back and look at what made the original Halo one of the best games of all time, and build off of that. Although I think it might be due to the fact that people are generally just getting bored with the whole saga anyway.

I agree, the campaign mode is neglected when compared to the DLC treatment that the multiplayer component received. I know that DLC is where the cash can be made now days, but please don't have ass a campaign simply to have one. Halo: CE's strength was the campaign because multiplayer only existed over LAN. People got hooked by the single player experience without ever being connected to Xbox Live.
In general, I feel like I'm burned out on Halo's multiplayer simply by way of how its been built. I feel as though a Call of Duty model could really do the game some good. Reward the player for their actions, not just their wins or losses. Its really frustrating to play Halo 3, destroy the opposite team and lose because you had teammates who quit. Plus all players peak out at a certain point where they can't really rank up or it takes thousands of games to do so. Bungie needs to give players little tokens of something to reward players who keep playing even though they have reached their highest skill.

I really thought they were going to be good artists and let the thing go. Tell your story, make your game, and then let it go.
They're not, and the stuff they'll chrun out will get worse and worse and tarnish all the good stuff that they've done.

you never know.. what if it gets them into something else? this new engine has more possibilities they might make a whole new series having nothing to do with halo.

Agreed, the new engine definitely looks nice, and I think bungie said somewhere that this will be their last Halo game.

Idk I hope what ever they make is cool. When I get my new GF100 I'll be playing any and everything on highest settings, including Crysis.

This one, by far, looks the best =]. I'd say it looks better than H3 or ODST

I have read the book, and am excited for the game. The new engine will make people's faces more realistic, not like clay carving like they did on ODST. The battles will be bigger in scope, you and 20 marines vs. 40-45 covenant. I think if this truly is the last Bungie Halo game (I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2nd Halo Wars from 343) they're gonna put the best product out there. The multiplayer beta launches on my birthday (may 3rd). I plan on playing it until my eyes bleed.

I hope that in the game they put some of the plot elements from the books.

it'd be sort of stupid if they didn't.. It's like guy - "hey guys, I jst read this awesome book!!! Let's make a game about it!." a few years later.. guy - "well this turned out nicely." guy's friend - "Dude this has nothing to do with that book." guy - "yea but it looks cool"

Ensemble DID Halo Wars...then they got shut down by Microsoft. Robot Entertainment is the new form of Ensemble basically.
All 343 Industries does is oversee development & licensing of the Halo franchise for Microsoft Game Studios. ie action figures, board games, books
