That be a negative, they are working on future software, or addon apparantly to make it possible.

Why would they make it backwards compatible when they can charge you.

According leaked Sega-Sony documents, they plan on releasing PS2 games via the PSN for download.

Only the launch PS3's have backwards compability and handful of others like the MGS/Motorstorm bundles that have it through software. Wikipedia has a decent listing of them models with their features.

Sony removed the PS3's backwards compatibility to cut down on the costs. If you've got a 120, 80 or 40 GB model, they can't play PS2 games. If you have an original or one of the special edition consoles, they can play PS2 games fine.

Rumor has it Sony will be bringing PS2 titles into the PSN market next year for purchase.
