it was an ancient computer game, pre pc. Came out on the BBC computer in 1984 spread to other platforms of the time (commodore, amiga etc). Used wire frame graphics (but its now shaded).

You were a space pilot in a 3d universe and you could be a pirate, trader or mixture. It was meant to be a simulation. There were 8 galaxies and 2048 solar systems ranging from dangerous arnachies to safe corporate. You start at harmless and earn status up until Elite level through kills.

That sounds like an old school version of Escape Velocity and X3.
